This game has regional differences. The game's also known for its infamously troubled production, in which it started life as a launch title for a planned CD drive add-on for the SNES, only to have to be significantly cut down to fit on a much smaller cartridge when the partnership between Nintendo and Sony that said CD drive hinged on spectacularly fell apart. The outcome of that partnership's failure eventually led to the creation of the PlayStation, a console Square would eventually jump ship to, thanks in part to the production problems with Secret of Mana. Barring glitches or cheat codes, it's impossible to get the sword up to Level 9, unlike every other weapon.

Popoi is a playable character from Secret of Mana. A Sprite being from the world of Secret of Mana, Popoi is mischievous, boastful, but caring. His age is unknown, but he is 3 ft. Popoi's default weapon is the boomerang. His specialty in battle is attack magic, allowing him to deliver devastating amounts of damage from a safe distance. This is especially important because he is the exact opposite of Randi in terms of parameters: his attack, defense and HP are the lowest of the team and he learns special attacks with weapons very slowly. Randi first meets Popoi at the Dwarf Village where he makes a living by scamming people at the Elder's freak show. Due to a massive flood in the Upper Land that washed him away into Gaia's Navel, Popoi has lost his memory and doesn't remember anything about his past. At the Dwarf Elder's suggestion, he joins Randi in hopes of recovering his memory.
The Sprite Village was a settlement in Secret of Mana. Protected by a magical seal, it lies hidden within the Forest of Seasons in the Upper Land. In thanks for liberating their village from monsters, the moogles give Popoi a clue as to the location of their former hometown. Translating for the moogles, Popoi recites it aloud as follows:. Randi and his party run through the forest as per the clue, and so break the seal on the secluded enclave once home to a tribe of sprites. Popoi arrives in shock, as the village is barren. Randi senses trouble up ahead, and finds a Spring Beak in the courtyard of the Wind Palace , which the party must fight.
